High Self-Sufficiency Ratio (SSR): Domestic Production Capacity Strengthened, however Import Dependency Remains Significant

The compilation of SUA encompasses the selected agricultural commodities refers to three categories namely crops (fruits, vegetables and others), livestock and fisheries. In 2024, a total of 60 agricultural commodities including six new items which include french bean, mushroom, dragon fruits, pomelo, pomfret and red snapper were covered and 24 of them recorded self-sufficiency ratio (SSR) more than 100.0 per cent.

• Nine selected fruits recorded exceeding 100.0 per cent. A high SSR value signifies that domestic production is able to meet local demand. Papaya (142.4%), starfruit (124.1%), watermelon (123.1%), sweet corn (113.9%), jackfruit (110.1%), durian (103.7%), dragon fruit (102.9%), pineapple (102.1%) and guava (102.1%). However, SSR for mango (20.6%) remained low.

• Eight selected types of vegetables were sufficient to meet domestic demand, namely french bean, 122.8 per cent; tomato, 113.0 per cent; spinach, 107.1 per cent; long bean, 107.1 per cent; cucumber, 105.7 per cent; lady finger, 104.6 per cent; lettuce, 104.2 per cent; and brinjal, 104.1 per cent. The lowest SSR was recorded for chilli, 35.8 per cent. Only the supply of sugarcane from other selected crops was sufficient, with 179.7 per cent. SSR for shallot for the first time recorded 0.01 per cent. 

• Livestock commodities that continued to record an SSR exceeding 100.0 per cent in 2024 were duck meat and chicken/ duck eggs. Duck meat recorded the highest SSR at 129.9 per cent while by chicken/ duck eggs at 107.0 per cent.

• Only four from 15 fisheries main species showed a positive performance in production, namely seabass (12.3%), tuna (108.3%), crab (100.5%) and river catfish (100.0%).

• Malaysia remains dependent on imports for commodities such as mutton (IDR: 92.1%) and beef (IDR: 83.5%). Similarly, temperate fruits such as apples and essential cooking ingredients such as garlic and onions continue to be imported due to cost constraints and agroecological factors.
